THE annual Winter Blues Festival kicked off at yesterday’s Echuca races and runs until Sunday.

And the festival launch has also celebrated one of the festival’s more popular annual highlights – the decorated guitar competition.

The competition attracts more than 100 entries each year which create a blues inspired cardboard guitar.

Festival creative arts co-ordinator Dave Callanan said the competition was a great way to get the local community in the spirit for the upcoming festival.

“It is a way of saying the festival is all systems go,” he said.

“All entry fees will go towards keeping our festival free.”

The guitars are being displayed in supporting businesses who have donated prizes.

The Winter Blues Festival attracts more than 20,000 people to the Echuca-Moama area with accommodation venues and cafes booming throughout the four-day event which features some of the best blues musicians performing around the twin towns.

And the winners this year were:

■Pre-School: Sadie Laffy

■Age 6-12: 1st Frederick Rowe-Hansen; 2nd Kyla Mags, 3rd Eliza Leed.

■Age 13-17: Sarah Thompson

■Adult: Sarah Jenkins

‘‘We are lucky with the support we receive from local business with prizes and continued support of our festival, ’’ Mr Callanan said.
