Harp harmony is almost here

By Riverine Herald

A TRIO of harpists will light up Echuca Uniting Church on Sunday.

Across five Sundays, five talented groups will take to the stage for all to see and experience.

All performances will be held on Sundays from 2pm. The church is accessible by ramp, stairs and lift. Parking is also available.

There is plenty of room for all to sit, with about 180 seats available per performance.

Starting on Sunday, the Harmony of Harps performance will be carried out by Echuca’s own Pete Gibson, Shirley Allott and Jill Findlay.

Following Pete will be the Bendigo Chorale on September 16. On October 7, Crescendo — a group who will travel from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, will have centre stage.

After that, on November 4, the Spirit of Brass will be headed up by Echuca’s Federal Band. And last but not least, on December 9, the combined voices of the community Christmas celebration will take place.

The price for the first four performances is $15 with a series ticket available from the church office, or by phoning 0429 801 342.

The Christmas performance will just ask for a donation at the door.

In the first performance, two of the three performers, Jill Findlay and Pete Gibson, are members of Harper Bizarre, an organic group of harpists who meet regularly for fine music.

Under the direction of central Victorian harpist and harp maker Andy Rigby, the group has expanded its repertoire beyond Celtic and Latin American music to encompass multiple styles.

Jill is an experienced harpist with more than 20 years’ experience, who moved to central Victoria to be near where the action of harps happen.

Pete, having learnt piano at an early age and acquiring a taste for a variety of stringed musical instruments, attended an Andy Rigby workshop in 2012 to build a 26-string Para-Celtic lap harp.
